Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
