This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
