In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
