The Gunners' Boss Admits Extended Role Depends on Securing Major Honors.

On the eve of his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

Arteta was appointed on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. Yet, that early success remains his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced just after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

Given that chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

He is under a contract with 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the board and owners, but pinpointing the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

Arsenal approaches the Everton match dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is likely to keep him out for several weeks.

A Different Club

Regardless of the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta believes the club's “priorities and messaging” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

He finished by saying, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
