The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir next month named Notes from a Cell, detailing the period spent in jail.

This news emerged just 11 days after the former president left prison as he appeals the court ruling related to criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire election campaign funds provided by the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“In prison there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in an extract, implying the memoir is more about his reflections while in solitary confinement rather than a broader observation regarding the overcrowded and struggling jail system in France.

“I forget silence, not present at the prison, where noise is constant sound,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, inner life grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, Sarkozy participated via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

He, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as former head from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to read and critique the texts he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

Sarkozy was placed secluded due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in Paris. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted solely dairy snacks during his stay due to concerns prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain every day during the incarceration, informed the court his safety would improve released than inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month when the judiciary gave him a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to acquire political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
