Taliban Employed Discarded British Technology to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Learns

A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind classified technology permitting the Taliban to track down local individuals that had served with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger

Person A, called Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are investigating official response of a massive leak of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to come to Britain to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, such as names, contact details and sometimes family information, was mistakenly released by an official stationed at special operations center in last year.

The leak came to light in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to settle in Britain were posted on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that militant forces lack comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have your phone number, they are able to track you down to within metres. That's precisely what intelligence groups accomplished.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Initial findings submitted to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A gag order about the incident was put in force in last year and prevented any information about it from media reporting until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and altered their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired these details, would cause them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The source argued that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the records by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing violence experienced by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“We have had toddlers who have had their arms broken to try to get the family to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
