Six Suspects Apprehended After €12M Robbery on Precious Metals Facility in France
A group of six individuals carrying assault rifles and handguns used explosive devices to break into a gold treatment facility located in Lyon, France, slightly injuring five employees during what is being called the newest significant broad daylight robbery to hit the nation.
The bold operation occurred on Thursday late morning, with law enforcement authorities quickly arresting the individuals believed responsible and retrieving the loot estimated to be worth 12 million euros (ÂŁ10.5M), as stated by authorities.
Five employees of the precious metals facility sustained minor injuries as a result of the detonation, and three employees were transported to hospital for evaluation, the regional prefecture announced. Twenty-eight workers were inside the facility when the thieves struck.
The individuals, thought to be career criminals, were taken into custody shortly after the incident in the nearby town of the town of VĂ©nissieux, a source close to the investigation stated.
A female accomplice who participated in the raid was taken into custody as well, a police source indicated.
“Six individuals who utilized explosives in an attack on a gold refining facility in Lyon, France were caught in the act,” the French interior minister announced via X, lauding police for their “firmness, rapid response and command”.
Military-style weapons, pistols and explosive materials were also confiscated.
The heist took place as authorities on that Thursday detained five further people, including a primary suspect, in connection with this month's brazen raid on the Louvre museum.
Numerous detectives have been pursuing four thieves who utilized a lorry equipped with a moving lift and cutting tools to break into an upper-level exhibition space at the prestigious institution on 19 October, making off with precious items estimated to be worth 88 million euros.
In a separate high-profile case, thieves last month entered illegally the French capital's Natural History Museum, taking gold specimens estimated at exceeding $1M. A woman from China, aged 24 was taken into custody recently in Barcelona in connection with the break-in, officials confirmed.
The string of thefts has sparked worry in the nation regarding lax security at cultural venues and other facilities containing precious artifacts.
