New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.

“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
