Weather experts have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," said the weather service.
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
