As stated by the United Nations refugee organization, more than 60,000 people have escaped the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the militia Rapid Support Forces during the weekend.
Accounts suggest multiple executions and atrocities as RSF fighters entered the city after an extended encirclement marked by famine and heavy bombardment.
The exodus of those running from the violence towards the community of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had increased in the past few days, per United Nations refugee agency spokesperson.
Refugees were describing shocking tales of atrocities, including sexual violence, and the humanitarian group was having trouble to find sufficient housing and nourishment for them.
Each child was experiencing malnutrition, she added.
Estimates suggest that in excess of 150,000 residents are presently trapped in el-Fasher, which had been the military's remaining fortress in the western part of Darfur.
The RSF has disputed broad accusations that the killings in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and follow a pattern of the Arab paramilitaries focusing on non-Arab communities.
Nevertheless the paramilitary group has arrested one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in on-the-spot executions.
The force shared footage depicting the member's apprehension subsequent to verification that he was responsible for the death of several civilians in the vicinity of el-Fasher.
Social media platform has confirmed that it has suspended the account connected to Lulu. It is not clear whether he had operated the profile in his identity.
Sudan was entered a domestic fighting in April 2023 after a vicious contest for control began between its military and the RSF.
The conflict has resulted in a starvation emergency and accusations of mass killing in the Darfur area.
In excess of 150,000 persons have lost their lives in the fighting throughout the country, and roughly 12 million have left their homes in what the United Nations has termed the world's largest humanitarian emergency.
The seizure of el-Fasher strengthens the regional separation in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in control of the western region and a large portion of neighbouring Kordofan to the south, and the military occupying the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the coastal region.
The competing factions had been allies - coming to power together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but disagreed over an internationally backed plan to transition to democratic governance.
