As part of a notable escalation, Kyiv's forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, according to the country's military authorities.

Details of the Strike and Military Significance

The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" observed at the location. This represents another instance where Ukrainian forces has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles against objectives inside Russian territory.

Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the main suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is actively engaged in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.

Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict

In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.

“It was a really good conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, meetings, and, certainly, the schedule.”

Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.

The charges are said to be based on an online post Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as politically motivated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in protest.

International Detainee Situation

Russian authorities has stated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing additional accusations of espionage.

A spokesperson stated that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources mobilised to offer assistance and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.

Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City

The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its basement, is scheduled to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.

Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have called the planned opening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Kremlin effort to present its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and property seizures from local residents.

The theatre is due to reopen by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the past two years.
