Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice was instrumental in spreading reggae music worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and positive temperament earned him a large and longstanding following.

In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a landmark of film in Jamaica.

He was one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
