Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The criminal group invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
