Feeling As If Your Consciousness and Physical Self Are Disconnected? Here’s The Transformation When We Become Whole.

I just got back from a jog. I’m amazed to write this fact. I think it could have been a decade since the previous time. However I found out recently that my levels show elevated cholesterol, and doctors suggested to engage in vigorous activity regularly.

It’s the initial instance in my existence that the reason to work out has been my health status. During earlier years, I jogged because I desired to lose weight. At times I ran to alleviate nervousness – I was merely escaping from the worry, instead of dealing with it. Sometimes, I ran because I aimed to improve at running. This was the meaning to me back then to build an improved existence.

Exercising with new motivation at present prompted contemplation about the methods I’ve related with my physique throughout my life and how this is changing as I move from youth to being a middle-aged person. I believe not I’ve honored my body, not truly. I’ve valued it only for its capabilities and the purposes it served me: seeking approval; avoiding feelings; running a faster 5km. Up to now, I’ve not understood that I am my body, it is my existence, as opposed to an instrument for achievements.

A lot has been explored over the centuries about the separation between body and mind – which it’s reassuring to know, I’m not going to precis now. What resonated most fascinating is Sigmund Freud’s view that mental and physical selves are innately connected from birth, because physical maturation requires emotional evolution and conversely. A baby’s physical sensations – such as the corporeal experience of hunger – drive the brain to cultivate the capacity to perceive hunger as an emotion that is alleviated by nourishment; and the mental reassurance and satisfaction consistently provided by repeated nourishment nourishes the infant’s psyche similar to the food fuels them physically. So too emotional occurrences – for instance the wish to rise and grab an object, and the resolve to persist through effort – are the reason and method physical strength increases. Since infancy, our body and mind are interlinked in shared growth as integrated as a double helix.

But I have noticed, during therapy with my psychoanalyst, that my consciousness and physique may exist in a distinct connection – a less unified and increasingly manipulative. My mind might utilize my physique to hold and express things that my consciousness views unwanted or intolerable. During therapy it emerged how there are specific feelings that I fear I cannot bear; rather than experiencing them mentally, I subconsciously force them into bodily form, becoming trapped as corporeal issues.

I often had this as indigestion – unrelated to what I’d eaten, but acted as a type of physical reflux of the harsher emotions I was unable to process mentally. This wasn’t a conscious choice, but once it was raised to awareness in sessions, and my fear and insecurity and rage and terror became palpable and expressed verbally instead of converted to corporeal symptoms, it disappeared. It’s uncommon for me from indigestion today.

The most severe episode I experienced this severe heartburn, I didn’t sleep for several nights in a row. It seemed I was slipping away from my sanity. I consulted to the GP, who arranged all sorts of diagnostic procedures, but everything was corporally problematic. It was an alternate medic who told me that the root may be mental. My therapist concurred. I was shocked, but I also knew it was accurate.

Whenever someone is suffering a corporeal problem, it can be upsetting upon hearing that there might be a psychological cause. It can seem like disrespect, being told that their illness is imagined. Naturally it’s a real phenomenon – individuals may experience their pain discounted or incorrectly identified. Yet occasionally it might be that the bodily signs are real – without doubt – and the origin is mental, the subconscious employing the physical self to express certain suffering or anger or whichever sentiment the conscious self fails to handle. At times, we may believe our emotions only has value only through expression as bodily symptoms. We often undervalue our mental states as individuals, collectively and within our culture; how else would we tolerate the appalling elimination of psychodynamic psychotherapy through health services?

Life lessons have shown me that an improved existence cannot be created while caught without realization in ways of relating, internally and with others, that originate in disrespect, manipulation and transaction. Such patterns are frequently more straightforward to recognize “out there” in the general public. It may be more challenging to consider their origins, and to recognise these patterns inside us and within our closest relationships, in the dynamics of our psyches.

But it’s valuable to continue. After donning my jogging shoes back on following many years, heading out not to get a better body, or to escape an emotion, or to surpass a personal best, {it
