California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is enduring water scarcity. This milestone follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.

An Update Shows No Dryness

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is without any level of drought. This development resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the high-elevation snow place it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which supplies about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
