The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
